Gujarat Minister of State for Urban Housing Shankar Chaudhary today urged the central government to encourage and promote Foreign Direct Investment in the housing sector.

Speaking at a conclave of Ministers of Urban Development and Housing of Central and state/UT governments convened by Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu, Mr Chaudhary also urged the Centre to devise a comprehensive policy framework ensuring flexibility in involvement of public-private agencies and community enlargement.

"There is a need to bring in change in lifestyle of beneficiaries for EWS and slum schemes through integration with other schemes," he said.

Mr Chaudhary said housing sector generates revenue for all levels of the government and creates direct impact on economy, employment generation and social sector.

Sharing the Gujarat model of urban development, he said the state has adopted an overarching framework of policies and programmes which include regulations for slum redevelopment and rehabilitation.

The Gujarat Minister further said land should be made available through urban land use planning (town planning and development plan) and there should be optimal utilisation of land through rationalised planning norms.
