Bandamuri Nagamalleswara Rao, engineer from Andhra Pradesh who was kidnapped by suspected Bodo militants at Kalachand, about 60 km from Haflong in Assam on June 17, was rescued yesterday.

Mr Rao, in-charge of a crushing unit of the Hyderabad-based Vashishta Constructions, was abducted by five heavily armed masked militants, who demanded a ransom of Rs six crore for his release.

Rao, a native of Kunamneni Vaari Palem in Cheemakurthy mandal in Prakasam district, has a son and a daughter. His wife died in January this year due to ill-health.

Police confirmed that Rao had spoken with his company officials at 1745 hrs yesterday.

According to official sources, the militants forced their way into the company's office on June 17 night and abducted Rao at gunpoint.

The next day, they called up the manager of the firm in Assam and demanded Rs six crore for Rao's release.

Hyderabad-headquartered Vashishta Constructions claimed to have provided security to its staff to prevent abductions.
