Samajwadi Party today announced the name of Tej Pratap Singh Yadav as its candidate for the bypoll at Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat, which had fallen vacant after the resignation of party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Notably, Tej Pratap is the grandson of SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.

The by-election was necessitated, following the resignation of Mr Yadav from Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat. He had contested the Lok Sabha election from Mainpuri and Azamgarh seats and had retained the later one. Mainpuri happens to the stronghold of SP.

Meanwhile, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has decided not to field its candidate in the bypoll at the seat.

BJP has shortlisted five names for the bypoll.
