Mumbai, Jan 31 : Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh has stepped down from his post to join politics amid speculations that he might contest elections as a BJP candidate.

The 1980 batch IPS, who is now 59, confirmed the news of his resignation himself and said he is yet to decide which party to join.

He has sent his papers to the Maharahstra home ministry.

There are also speculations that he might join the Aam Aadmi Party, but reports suggest he might be close to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Expressing that he wants to serve the people, Singh said on Friday: "I have an offer but I am yet to decide which party to join."

Asked if he would contest form his home state Uttar Pradesh (he is Meerut born), he said for "30 years I served Maharashtra and so I am close to Maharashtra now."

He said media guesses on his joining any particular party are unfounded and baseless.

A post-graduate in chemistry, Singh is also an M Phil (Chemistry). He has an MBA degree from Australia too.
