Senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi today said the party had not fielded any candidate but would look into the candidature of BJP MLC Dilip Jaiswal who had filed nomination as an Independent for the Rajya Sabha by-elections.

The former deputy chief minister told mediapersons here the BJP had already announced that it would not field any candidate for the by-elections to three vacant Rajya Sabha seats from Bihar. 'It came to our knowledge through media that Mr Jaiswal had filed his nomination paper,' he added.

When asked how Mr Jaiswal could file the nomination without informing the party leadership, Mr Modi said anyone could land in the fray as an Independent candidate. 'Anyway, there is time left for withdrawal of the candidature,' he said, hinting about the possibility of Mr Jaiswal withdrawing his nomination on the directive of the party leadership.

Apart from Mr Jaiswal two other Independents--Anil Sharma and Shabir Ali--had also filed their nomination papers. Three JD(U) candidates, including party president Sharad Yadav, Ghulam Rasool Baliyavi and Pawan Kumar Verma had also filed their papers on last day of filing of nomination papers today.If required, voting would be held on June 19.
