Admn will take steps to impose total ban on plastic
The Puducherry Administration will take steps to impose total ban on the use of plastic in the Union Territory, Minister for Education, Science and Technology, T Thyagarajan, said here today.
Speaking at the function organised by the Department of Science, Technology and Environment, to celebrate the World Environment Day today, the minister said all basic facilities are available in this tiny union territory where all central schemes are being implemented.
Mr Thyagarajan said all the four regions of the union territory were having sea and because of the global warming, the sea level was rising. The Puducherry administration has done it's mite to reduce the global warming and LED bulbs are being provided to every household at a subsidised rate. Further the street lights from Kalapet to Kanagachettikkulam were replaced with LED bulbs, he added.
The minister said the administration was sticking on to it's decision that pollutting industries and industries which drew more water would not be permitted in the union territory. A major chunk of trees were destroyed in the Thane cyclone and to compensate this, the administration was planing five thousand saplings every year, he added. The major cause of environment pollution was use of plastic, he said and added that the Puducherry administration had already banned the use of plastic measuring a particular micron and steps would be taken to impose a total ban on use of plastic here.
Mr Kandavelu, Secretary, Science, Technology and Environment and it's Director Dwaraganath among others participated in the function.
Later, a seminar was organised to mark the occasion in which experts participated and spoke on topics such as the "Impact of sea level rise on shore and coastal erosion, marine bio-diversity and Marine debris on eco-system" among others.
