Four women weightlifters Poonam Yadav, Vandana Gupta, Swati Singh and Saraswati Rout trained at SAI Training Centre, Guru Govind Singh Sports College, here have been selected for the Commonwealth Games, 2014 to be held at Glasgow, Scotland in next month.

According to a SAI statement, Poonam Yadav and Vandana Gupta, both have been selected for 63 Kg and Swati Singh has been selected for 53 Kg weight category. Saraswati Rout has been selected in 58 Kg weight category for Junior World Championship to be held at Kazan.

Poonam Yadav, who hails from Dandupur in Varanasi was admitted in SAI Training Centre in May 2010. She has earlier won Bronze medal at the Junior Asian Weightlifting Championship at Bangsaen, Thailand, in March. At national level she won one Gold, one Silver and one Bronze at Senior National W/L Championship at Nagpur.

Vandana Gupta, hails from Lucknow. She trained at STC Lucknow from May 2007 to October 2009.

She initially started her sports career as a Kabbaddi player but the eagle eyes of G P Sharma, weightlifting coach put her to weightlifting. In 2012 she won bronze medal in Myanmar. Her father earns his living through catering.

Swati Singh is also an ex-trainee and hails from Varanasi. She trained at STC Lucknow from Nov 2004 till October 2008. She later joined N.E. Railway but continued to train at STC Lucknow.

Sarawati Rout hails from Bhubeneshwar and was admitted in STC Lucknow in May 2011 and within two years of rigorous training has been selected for Junior World Championship. Earlier, in December 2013, she won 2 bronze medal and 1 silver at the Junior National Championship at Gauhati.

All the weightlifters are being trained by G P Sharma, weightlifting Coach.
