Hundreds of activists of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) led by CPM Bonai MLA Laxman Munda today sat on a dharna in front of the Odisha State Assembly demanding the government to re-open the mines closed on the direction of the Supreme Court since May 19 last.

At least 26 mines in Joda, Barbil and Koida circles under the public and as well as private sectors were closed after the apex court issued an interim stay order on May 16 last on the mines operating on the basis of second and subsequent deemed renewals after expiry of their lease period.

CITU General Secretary Bishnu Mohanty said around one lakh workers working in mines, transportation and loading lost their livelihood for no fault of their following the closure of mines.

He said the mines were closed due to the negligence of the government. Though the mine owners had applied for renewal of their leases six years back, the state government had failed to act upon it.

The CITU demanded the government to initiate steps immediately for reopening of the mines failing which they would further intensify their agitation.
