The Forest Department of Gujarat has received India Biodiversity Award-2014, jointly instituted by Indian government and the UNDP, for its contribution towards the conservation of the Whale sharks.

According to a Forest Department release today, the department,in co-operation from the local people and the fishermen, has succeeded in releasing around 57 Whale sharks caught in the fishing nets of the fishermen.

The state has paid an amount of Rs 57 lakh as compensation to the concerned fishermen and others for releasing the Whale sharks in the sea.

Deputy Forest Conservator Aradhana Sahu had received the award on behalf of the state government at Port Blair in Andaman Nicobar on May 22, the release said.
