Former Congress MLA and popular tribal leader Basudeb Majhi passed away at a private hospital here today following protracted illness. He was 68. Majhi had entered olitics and joined the Congress in 1964. He was first elected as the chairman of the Kotpad panchayat Samittee and then elected to the state assembly from Kotpad in 1974.


He had been elected to the state Assembly for eight times from Kotpad Assembly seat in 1974,1977,1980,1985,1995,2000,2004 and 2009. Due to his ill health he did not contest the 2014 Assembly elections.

Mr Majhi was a popular tribal leader in his area and served the people during flood, cyclone and natural calamities.

Odisha Pradesh Congress chief Jayadeb Jena,former Congress MP Pradeep Majhi and BJD Minister Ramesh Chandra Majhi have condoled the demise of Majhi.
