Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Asha Mirje has triggered a controversy by saying that gangrape victims themselves were also responsible for such incidents.

Referring to the Delhi and Mumbai gangrape incidents, Mirje told a gathering here: "Did Nirbhaya really needed to go and watch a movie at 11 pm in the night with a friend?"

"You can also take the Shakti Mills gang rape case ... Why did she (victim) go to an isolated place at 6 pm?" she said.

Asking women to be careful, the NCP leader said: "We need to be careful. We should ask ourselves that where am I going? With whom I am going and do I really need to go to that place?"

She said sexual assault on women occurs due to their "clothes, behaviour and for being at unfit places".
