Niranjan Pujari, former Cabinet minister, will be the Speaker of the 15th Odisha Legislative Assembly.

Mr Pujari was the Cabinet Minister for Industries and Excise in the last government.

He is the lone candidate to file the nomination for the post of Speaker after Biju Janata Dal Chief Naveen Patnaik proposed his name for the post.

The proposal was seconded by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Bikram Keshari Arukh. In the 147-member house, the BJD has 117 members. The Congress, the main opposition party has only 16 seats while the BJP has 10 members.

Since the Congress did not field any candidate for the post of Speaker on the last date of nomination today, Mr Pujari would be formally declared as the Speaker on May 26.

Meanwhile, party supremo Mr Patnaik has appointed BJD Bhograi MLA Ananta Das, the government Chief Whip, and Rohit Pujari, who has been elected from Rairakhol Assembly Constituency, as the Deputy Chief Whip of the party.
