Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi has donated Rs 21 lakh from his personal savings for the welfare of the daughters of Gujarat Government's drivers and peons.

Before leaving for New Delhi to take over the new assignment, Mr Modi remembered the plight of the childern of drivers and peons and announced the donation of Rs 21 lakh for the welfare of their girls, a state government release said today.

A corpus fund would be created and the people's participation will also be invited.

The fund would be used for the welfare of the daughters of the drivers and the peons.

The fund would be managed under the supervision of the Chief Minister and the Chief Secretary.

Mr Modi, a known advocate of the girls education, had set up Chief Minister Girls Education Fund.

To raise the donation, he had auctioned the gifts he received and donated the entire amount to the fund.

The people's participation was also invited and more than Rs 89. 96 crore were collected.
