The Punjab government has issued strict instructions to all agencies involved in construction of building and highways to ensure 100 per cent utilisation of fly ash in accordance with the notification issued by Science and Technology department.

According to an official spokesman, as per the stipulations all coal, lignite based thermal power stations or expansion units in operation in the state on the date of notification would achieve 100 percent fly ash utilization within five years of notification.

Similarly, new coal and lignite based thermal plants commissioned after November 3, 2009 were required to ensure 100 per cent utilisation of fly ash within four years of setting up of plant.

The spokesman said it has been observed that agencies involved in the construction of buildings and highways were not utilising fly ash as per stipulations.

To ensure the strict compliance of these instructions the Punjab Government has constituted a state level committee for the constructive and purposeful use of fly ash emitting from various thermal plants of the state.

The Secretary of Science Technology and Environment Department of the state would be the Chairman of this committee. The spokesperson said this committee would be comprised of Secretary, Power, Director, Industries Department (Mining), Chief Engineer (Headquarter), Public Works Department (B & R) and Member Secretary, Punjab Pollution Control Board as Members while Chief Engineer (Thermal Design, Patiala) of PCPCL would be the Member Convener of the committee.
