Six people were killed and 24 others injured when a Cuttack-bound night service bus from Kolkata spun several times after hitting a roadside tree near this industrial town of West Medinipur district early today, police said.

The mishap took place at Madhpur around 0300 hrs when the speeding bus skidded off the road and hit a trunk of the tree, eye witnesses said. Police said six people died on the spot.

A survivor heading for Judgepur said the packed bus spun several times after hitting the tree and then overturndd.

He said the rescue was inadequate in the dark and most of the injured helped themselves either move to local hospital or manage to move further in other vehicles.

He said most of the victims were either sleeping or dozing during the time of accident.
