The Punjab Government today issued notification for creation of a nodal agency to supervise the cases registered under the NDPS Act, 1985 to ensure speedy trial.


Stating this here today, an official spokesperson said this decision has been taken as it was observed that their is delay in dealing with such cases and courts are being approached to extend the detention period of the accused this extends the litigation period and resultantly people have to pass more time of their lives in jails to get their bail applications considered.

He said that the nodal agency would supervise the cases registered under NDPS Act constituted under the chairmanship ADGP (Crime), which will consist of all the Zonal Police Commissioners as members and DIG (Crime) as member Secretary.

He said that the Nodal Agency will collect the information fortnightly in enclosed proforma from DSPs posted in the districts of the state and will hold frequent meetings to scrutinies of the cases registered under NDPS Act 1985 in various police stations.

The spokesman said that the nodal agency will take steps to make sure that investigating officers would not have any discretion or possibility of any extraneous considerations in such cases and will also issue instructions to the all the investigating officers from time to time for the expeditious disposal of cases.

The nodal agency will submit its detailed progress report regarding disposal of NDPS cases to this department every two months which will be reviewed at the level of Principal Secretary/Secretary Home, he added.
