A Thane youth killed his wife of two years by strangulating her and then ended his own life by hanging himself to death in his house, the Thane police said today.

Sr PI VC Dolas of the Vitthalwadi police station told UNI, that the couple came to stay in the Dhanora Chawl of Sambhaji Nagar area some six months back. The husband had a printing press while the wife worked in a studio at Dombivili.

It was a routine that the wife used to visit her parents in Dombivili every day on her way home. As she did not visit her parents yesterday her father made a call to her and was concerned when he did not get a response, police said.

This morning, the girl's father came to her residence and knocked at the door but there was no response. The neighbours were called and one of them found the girl lying dead on the ground while the husband was spotted hanging from the ceiling of the house.

The police said the husband had strangulated his wife to death with the help of am 'odni' and with then hung himself using the same odni.

According to the complaint given by the father of the girl, the husband was a drunkard and the couple used to quarrel frequently over petty issues.

The police said the drinking habit might be the immediate provocation for the incident.

Inspector Dolas said the bodies had been sent for postmortem and the police have registered a case under 302 of the IPC following the murder of the wife and accidental death following the suicide of the husband.

Further investigations are being carried out by the local police,the officer said.

The police have identified the wife as Surekha Sachin Shinde, 26, and the husband as Sachin Laxman Shinde, 28.
