Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today welcomed the Supreme Court order for a CBI inquiry into the Saradha scam and urged the Centre to stop all chit funds in the country.

'We are welcoming the SC order. We are also urging the Centre to stop all chit funds,' Ms Banerjee said.

'The state government has tried to return money to those duped by the scam. Now, it is the task of CBI to return the money to those people,' she observed.

'If people don't get their money, they will go to the Congress, the BJP and the CPI(M) for the same,' Ms Banerjee maintained.

Earlier, Finance Minister Amit Mitra welcomed the Supreme Court order for a CBI inquiry into the Saradha ponzi scam, but hinted that it had a political connotation.

'We welcome the judgement of the Supreme Court, though it has come only two days before the fifth phase of the elections -- which some people are reading as political issues,' Mr Mitra said.
