Government agencies and private traders procured 108.58 lakh tonnes of wheat in Punjab by Thursday though the state government targeted procurement of 115 lakh tonnes.


With the arrival of wheat daily, the Punjab government would be able to procure 120 lakh tonnes wheat both by the government agencies and private traders, Punjab Mandi Board chairman Ajmer Singh Lakhowal said here today.

SPeaking to reporters soon after his arrival here to review the procurement prospects with the senior officers of government agencies and district Mandi officers, Mr Lakhowal said that so far government agencies procured 105.50 lakh tonnes and private traders procured 3.8 lakh tonnes wheat.

In reply to a question, he said that various market committees had started giving notice to procurement agencies for the clearance of procured wheat otherwise market committees would start imposing penalties over the unlifted wheat bags already procured.

Mr Lakhowal also said that Sangrur district topped with 9,71,855 tonnes while Ludhiana district with 8,68,133 lakh tonnes was at second while Patiala stood at third position with 7,98,811 lakh tonnes in the state.
