City bus services under the JNNURM programme would operate in three more clusters by the end of this year in Odisha.


Urban Development Special Secretary S K Ratho said the new clusters in which the city bus service would operate are-- Cuttack-Chowdwar, Balasore-Bhadrak and Jeypore-Koraput-Sunabeda. Mr Ratho said very soon a SPV would be created and tender would be invited for the purchase of the buses and development of infrastructure for the purpose and the buses are scheduled to operate by the end of this year. He said the state government had requested the Union government for running the city bus services in five clusters but the central government had approved only three.

Mr Ratho said the government had taken a decision to pursue the Union government to approve the Rourkela-Biramitrapur and Bolangir- Titilagarha - Patnagarha circuit soon.

The Special Secretary said while 100 buses will operate in the Cuttack-Chowdwar route, 54 buses will ply on the Balasore-Bhadrak circuit and 40 buses will run on the Jeypore-Koraput-Sunabeda route.

At present, city bus service is operating on three circuits of Bhubanswar-Cuttack-Puri, Berhampur-Chhatrapur-Gopalpur and Sambalpur-Jharsuguda-Burla-Hirakud route.

The Special Secretary said plan is also on to introduce Intelligent Traffic System (ITS) on the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack-Puri route to inform the passengers about the arrival, departure and position of the buses at the bus stops. The system would cost around Rs 3 crore. The system, he said would be installed first in the major stoppage at Bhubaneswar and then in phases in other places.

Mr Ratho said at present 125 buses were operating in 17 routes in the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack-Puri circuit.As many as 75,000 passengers are using the city bus service in the route every day. It was a significant improvement as only 12,000 passengers were using the city bus in 2010 when the service was first introduced.

He said very soon 72 more buses including 12 AC buses would be added to the fleet on the Bhubanswar-Cuttack-Puri route. The Special Secretary said a high level meeting held under the Chairmanship of the Development Commissioner I Srinivasan also decided to resolve the problems faced by the operators of the City bus services by taking strong action against the anti-socials and the ticket less travellers.

The meeting also decided to finalise the city wise route plan of the city buses for smooth operation of the city buses.
