Four unidentified armed dacoits today looted Rs 9 lakh from the cash counter of the Karmadha Gramya bank under Jaleswar block in Balasore district at gun point and fled from the scene. The dacoits also robbed Rs 21,600 from two customers including a woman, from the bank premises. While Rs 18,000 was looted from one customer, another customer was robbed off Rs 3,600.


Karmadha police said the four dacoits had come to the bank in two motorcycles and entered the bank posing as customer around 1330 hrs. After threatening the Branch Manager and the Cashier under the pistol point, they snatched the key of the locker and looted the money. The branch's Manager was on leave and another officer Bansidhar Raul was in charge when the incident occurred. The dacoits also smashed the cell phone of the Branch Manager before committing the crime. The police on being informed about the loot, rushed to the bank and sealed all the exit points to nab the dacoits.

Balasore Superintendent of police S Pravin Kumar, who rushed to the spot said 'We are yet to receive any formal FIR from the bank'. He said investigation is on. The dacoits fled towards West Bengal after committing the crime.

This is the second incident of looting of Gramya bank in Balasore and third incident in north Odisha within 3 months .

On February 14, dacoits had looted about Rs 3 lakh from a branch at Nizampur under Sadar police station and on April 9 around Rs 10 lakh from a Gram bank branch of Mayurbhanj.
