Amid demands for full autonomy to the federal investigating agency CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation), the Centre has granted Secretary status to the director of the probe body thus providing it with financial autonomy, said media reports.

According to reports, the move would be intimated to the Supreme Court by Solicitor General Mohan Parasaran during the coal scam hearing on Wednesday.

CBI needed permission of the government to make even small purchases like a computer.

Now the CBI director can take financial decisions of expenses up to Rs 15 crore, said reports.
