Trinamool supremo and state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today asked people to stand up against the plans of some political parties to divide Bengal on the basis of religion or ethnicity.

Ms Banerjee was addressing two election rallies here at Kharagpur and Medinipur in support of party candidate and veteran Bengali actress Sandhya Roy but had to cut short her speech because of an impending storm.

" We are all united. We will not allow anyone to incite violence and riots in Bengal. You must vote for communal harmony. Some people want to divide people on the basis of religion and ethnicity. People of Bengal will stand up against those who want to divide the state," she said.

While addressing the rally Trinamool supremo said, "We are working for the people despite a financial crunch. We have done more work in two and half years than what the Left has done in 34 years. Centre is taking a major share of our revenue," she pointed out.

"We want to work for all, irrespective of caste, creed or religion. Those who want to divide Bengal, will be defeated," she added.
