East Bengal rope in Ranti Martins
Nigerian hotshot Ranti Martins has poured praise on Kolkata giants Kingfisher East Bengal after the 27-year-old forward signed a two-year deal with the Club on Wednesday.
The deal will see the former Rangdajied United player play his trade with Armando Colaco's side until the end of the 2015/16 season, East Bengal club sources said here today.
In his first Media Conference at the Club after signing, Ranti stated that he was fully aware of his responsibilities and the kind of scrutiny he will face in leading the charge of a fan based club like East Bengal who have been the most consistent performer in the last four editions of the I-League.
Ranti further emphasised that working together as a team is the mantra for success. He told the media that he knew what he was capable of and what his role would be here.
"It's a new journey for me and a privilege to join East Bengal," Ranti was quoted as saying.
"The fan and the media interest will be something new for me but I don't see it as any pressure and instead look at it as a responsibility."
The Nigerian, who also plied his trade with United SC for the first half of the Airtel I-League season, has been instrumental for Shillong outfit Rangdajied from the moment he signed for them in February this year.
He finished his campaign in the Airtel I-League with a total of 12 goals, and also helped Rangdajied save relegation this season.
Ranti started his career in Indian Football with Goan outfit Dempo SC, where he joined in 2004, and went on to lift a record of two NFL (National Football League) titles and three I-League titles - in 2008, 2010, and 2012, respectively.
He also reunites with former Dempo gaffer Armando in East Bengal, and the Red and Golds Coach felt that Ranti's inclusion will give a big boost to the team in the forthcoming season which would facilitate the Club in striving for the elusive I-League title.
"If Ranti comes, it would be a great prospect for East Bengal," Armando was quoted as saying in the final press-conference of the Airtel I-League season.
Ranti is the leading goalscorer of NFL/I-League with 185 goals. He has won the Golden Boot on four occasions - 2006, 2011, 2012, and 2013, respectively.
