Deputy chief of the Indian Army (Retired) N S Malik said that the security and integrity of the country was not safe under the UPA regime.

Addressing the media here today, Lt Gen Malik, who is BJP's national security cell convener, said that the country's defence preparedness was not up to the mark under the Congress led UPA government at the Centre.

Mr Malik, who was here to seek votes for former servicemen in favour of the Visakhapatnam Lok Sabha BJP candidate K Haribabu, said there was a need to modernise the defence services including Air Force and Navy. The recommendations of the C Subrahmaniam Committee appointed by the NDA government after the Kargil war was not implemented by the UPA Government.

Stating that the defence budget should be enhanced, Lt Gen Malik said that the Centre has been spending only 1.7 per cent of the total GDP on efence sector which is not sufficient. ''The country needs a stable government and a strong leader to lead the country. It is only possible with a leader like Narendra Modi (BJP's prime ministerial candidate) who can take decisions for the sake of the country,'' he claimed.

He expressed confidence that BJP will form the new government.

Regarding the welfare measures for the ex-servicemen in the country, he said the present amount of Rs 500 crore is not enough to take up the welfare of the ex-servicemen and should be increased.

The Lt Gen said Gujarat Chief Minister Modi during his recent election meetings and rally promised to solve the issues of the ex-servicemen once the party comes to power at the Centre.

Retired Brigadier Raj Bahadur said that the ex-servicemen in the country will support the BJP in the election as they have confidence on the party.

Both retired army men are touring all over the country to seek support for BJP.
