RDC submits report on Hirakud Dam boat tragedy
Revenue Divisional Commissioner (Western Range) Pramod Mehrda today submitted a 22-page report to the Home Department on the February 9 tragic boat tragedy inside the Hirakud reservoir which claimed 31 lives.
A boat carrying members of the Sambalpur Lions club and their family capsized inside the reservoir near San Tikra Tihura ferry ghat under Dhankauda Block about 3 km from Sambalpur while they were returning home after a pinic near Jamdarpali on Hirakud dam dyke. The boat carrying 90 people including ladies and children capsized after the engine of the boat stopped functioning.
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had ordered a RDC probe into the tragedy a day after the incident following a furore inside the Odisha Assembly over the safety measures of the boat passengers. The report, the RDC said, had dealt with three things--persons responsible for the tragedy, the cause of the tragedy and suggestions on how to prevent such unfortunate incidents in future.
But Mr Mehrda did not elaborate to the press stating that he had submitted a detailed report to the government. The RDC on the instruction of the state government conducted an enquiry and took the deposition of many persons involved in the incident. He also questioned the members of the Lions Club who were returning from a family picnic on that ill-fated boat.
