The Karnataka government has 'partially' accepted the K Kasturirangan Committee report on safeguarding the ecologically sensitive Western Ghats saying that it was against any type of mining in the area.

However, the government refused to halt quarrying and sand mining in the green strip saying that it would 'affect' the local population in terms of jobs and development.

Briefing reporters here last night, after the state cabinet meeting, Law and parliamentary affairs minister T B Jayachandra said the government had accepted the recommendations by the committee to stop mining in Western ghats.

However, he said the government was against accepting other recommendation of banning quarrying and sand mining.

'The government is not against Kasturirangan report but against demarcation of ecologically-sensitive areas in the Western Ghats,' the minister said.
