Samajwadi Party Odisha unit President Rabi Behera today urged Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to raise the compensation amount for sun stroke and heat wave death from Rs.10,000 to Rs.1.5 lakh.


In a letter to the Chief Minister,Mr.Behera said the unprecedented rise in the day temperature in Odisha has increased sun stroke victims In the last 16 years as many as 3089 people have died in sun stroke out of which 2042 had died alone in 1998 alone.

This year almost 15 towns in the State have recorded more than 40 degree Celsius for last several days and till now 17 sun stroke deaths have been received by the State Relief Commissioner.

Mr.Behera feared that the figure would increase further in the month of May and June. He said the Odisha government has been paying Rs.1.5 lakhs to the victims of lightning, Tornado death, whirl-wind death and also boat-tragedy victims out ofthe Chief Ministers Relief Fund.

But in case of sun stroke deaths the compensation is being paid only Rs.10,000, Mr.Behera said and urged the Chief Minister to increase the sun stroke / heatwave victims from Rs.10,000 to Rs.1.5 lakhs.

He said if needed the permission may be taken from the Election Commission in this matter as the code of conduct is in force in the state due to the General Election 2014.

The SP President said the matter must be treated on a priority basis as most of the victims of sun stroke deaths belonged to poor strata of the society.
