Assam has lost another one horned rhinoceros, after poachers killed the animal in Kaziranga National Park (KNP) in the wee hours of Saturday.


Poachers killed a female rhino in the park and managed to flee with its horn, officials said.

The incident took place near the Sundar forest camp under Burapahar range office inside the park, where poachers used sophisticated weapons.

"Our boys found a dehorned carcass of a female rhino inside the park on Saturday morning," an official of KNP said.

Forest guards found at least eight empty cartridges of AK-47 rifle near the body.

Forest guards, police had launched an operation against poachers in the area.

Poachers killed four rhinos in KNP in this year so far.

In 2013, poachers killed at least 40 rhinos in the state.
