Authority to tighten security measures in Jagannath temple
Authorities today decided to take a slew of steps to provide foolproof security to the 12th century Sri Jagannath temple at Puri to ensure safety of the temple and the lakhs of devotees visiting the shrine.
The decision to undertake foolproof security was taken at a high-level meeting here attended by top police brass,the district and the temple administration officials.
After the meeting, Special DGP Sanjeev Marik said the meeting resolved to frisk every person entering the temple and scan their belongings and goods.
State of the art high resolution CCTV cameras would be fixed at a number of strategic locations inside the temple complex and at the temple outer walls to keep close vigil on the movements of suspicious persons.
Security personnel would monitor the cameras from a control room. Metal detector gates with goods scanners and mobile phone jammers would be installed at all the four temple gates.
These apart, watch towers would be effectively manned by the security officials round the clock. The Lions Gate police station would be equipped with all modern gadgets, weapons and additional personnel to deal with the situations.
All illegal constructions and unsafe buildings would be removed.
Besides Mr Marik, Director Intelligence S K Ray, IGP Operations Soumendra Priyadarshi, I G Central Range R P Koche, District Superintendent of police Anup Kumar Sahu,District Collector Dhiren Kumar Pattnaik and temple security officials participated in the meeting.
Earlier, during the day the special DGP along with security experts and Superintendent of Police Anup Kumar Sahu inspected the existing temple security arrangements.
The government swung into action after the reports about the visit of two top Indian Mujahdeen operatives visited the temple city and some other areas in the state in January this year and the detail photographs of the world famous temple and its surrounding appeared in social media sites.
The state government had made it mandatory for tourists to furnish their identity cards to check in any hotel or guest house in Puri.
