Carrying on the Congress offensive against Mamata Banerjee, Union Commerce Minister and senior Congress leader Anand Sharma today charged that the West Bengal chief minister was trying to protect the Saradha scamsters.

In what appeared to be a counter to Ms Banerjee's charge that the Congress was using the Enforcement Directorate(ED) to extract electoral mileage out of the scam, Mr Sharma said the logic that the probe was being conducted because of political differences was 'ridiculous.'

"If some people commit a crime, they will be punished and this is not political. She (Banerjee) cannot give a fig leaf of political differences to protect those who have looted and cheated people. They must be punished irrespective of the parties they belong to. Banerjee's logic is actually ridiculous," Mr Sharma told a news conference.

While the ruling Trinamool Congress raised objection to the ED coming into picture and refused to accept CBI as an investigating agency, Mr Sharma said, "I do feel the ED and SEBI have a role to play and the truth must come out. There have been allegations by some of the Trinamool MPs..all should be investigated."

Suspended Trinamool Rajya Sabha member Kunal Ghosh is at present behind the bars in connection with the scam and he has reportedly claimed involvement of several of his party colleagues.

The ED also interrogated Trinamool candidate for Balurghat seat Arpita Ghosh, who was a former chief of a Saradha-run television channel.
