Police have arrested notorious criminal Poojary Kudkoli, a close aide of underworld don Bannanje Raja who is holed up in the Gulf on charges of gun running and demanding ransom from businessmen in Karnataka.

Commissioner of police Raghavendra Auradkar said Poojari was operating out of the city and was handling Raja's 'business' of supplying illegal arms to underworld as well as threaten rich businessmen for ransom.

He was arrested in Upparpet police limit late last week by the Central Crime Branch officials who also recovered a revolver, a motorcycle and a mobile hand set. After being produced in a court, he was sent to police custody for eight days.

Poojari's modus operandi was to contact Raja over cell phone or his land line phones and the latter used to send e-mail message giving details of clandestine movement weapons and havala cash that would be handled by Poojary.

He is originally a native of Mangalore and a few years back came to the city and started business in real estate. He was also an LIC agent. In the meantime he is contact with Raja.

His job was to collect the telephone numbers of noted industrialists and pass it on to Raja, who would then hatch a plan to threaten them with life and extract ransom or 'hafta', the commissioner said in a release.
