Bengaluru FC meet Sporting Clube de Goa tomorrow in I-league
Bengaluru FC will want to take a bow from the Airtel I-League on a high as they meet Sporting Clube de Goa in the concluding match of the competition at Nehru Stadium here in Goa tomorrow.
Bengaluru FC have already taken an unassailable lead in the I-League and have already been crowned champions, although the official ceremony will only take place after the concluding game. The trophy will be presented to the winners and Bengaluru FC, there is little doubt, will not want anything to mar the big event.
Coach Ashley Westwood, the architect of Bengaluru's amazing triumph in the I-League, is expected to field a strong side, including the likes of Sunil Chhetri, Sean Rooney and Robin Singh.
Sporting Clube de Goa coach Oscar Bruzon, though, will not have any luxuries of fielding a strong side as he grapples with injuries at the end of the season. Several of Sporting Clube's players are on the injured list and Bruzon will use this as a chance to field players who are not tested as yet.
"I think this is a good opportunity to see what the players can do in such a situation," said the Spanish coach.
Contrary to what many believe, Sporting Club will have plenty at stake in the concluding game, said Bruzon.
"We have always targeted a place in the top five and this is where we are headed. We want to finish fourth and I believe that will be a good achievement for our side. We have learnt our lessons and next season we will strike back stronger," said the Spanish coach.
Shillong Lajong (33 points) and Dempo Sports Club (32 points) are both eyeing the fourth spot but with 34 points in their kitty and ahead of them both, Sporting Clube know they are in a better position to finish fourth.
The final game will be as much about Bengaluru FC and their stupendous efforts on debut in the I-League as it is about Oscar Bruzon setting out to finish what he had eyed at the start of the season.
