Police recovered 12 low-intensity country bombs from Koothankuzhi coastal hamlet in Madurai district, today.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team, along with sleuths of Tamil Nadu Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad, rushed to the village and recovered the country bombs which were concealed buried in sand.

However, no one was arrested in this connection, as the investigation was still underway, police said. The village is notorious for making crude and country bombs due to rivalry between two groups of fishermen.

Police had seized 2,500 country bombs from this village in 1999 and 25 bombs from a minor boy in October last year. Seven people, including three children, were killed in an explosion when miscreants were engaged in making country bombs at Tsunami colony at Idinthakarai village, the nerve centre of ongoing protests against Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) on November 26, 2013.
