Politicians seeking support of former Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Narain Dutt Tiwari was gaining ground in Lucknow and ultimately, the veteran leader issued an appeal in favour of Congress candidate Rita Bahuguna Joshi, here today.

Yesterday, BJP president and candidate from Lucknow Rajnath Singh went to meet Mr Tiwari and sought his blessings to be successful in the April 30 elections.

'Woh Raja hain' (he is Raja)... he came today...' samarthan toh hoga hi' (he will have my support),' Mr Tiwari, 88, said after meeting Mr Singh at his residence last morning.

Surprised by the BJP's move, Congress candidate Rita Bahuguna Joshi this morning dashed to the residence of Mr Tiwari and sought his support.

" I have just given my blessings to Rajnath Singh but my support is with you and Congress, "Mr Tiwari commented while meeting with Ms Joshi for about 45 minutes at his residence in Mall Avenue this morning.

Later, he also signed an appeal to the voters of Lucknow in favour of Ms Joshi.

Yesterday, the BJP chief, who touched the Congressman's feet and sought his blessings, added, 'When I made my first speech after being elected to the Vidhan Sabha in UP for the first time... he (Tiwari) came up to me and said 'you are the future of this state'.

There is a tough contest between Mr Singh and Ms Joshi to grab the three lakh odd Pahari (Uttarakhandi) and Brahmin voters and seeking the support of Mr Tiwari is an effort to woo both the community.

Mr Singh, 62, is reportedly facing a lukewarm response from the Brahmin community in Lucknow, critical to his win and part of the BJP's traditional upper-caste votebank.

The veteran, who has accused the Congress of 'neglecting' him after serving like a 'loyal soldier for 60 years', had already showed his dissent earlier this week by backing former Uttarakhand chief minister Bhagat Singh Koshiyari, who is the BJP's candidate from Nainital.
