Nestled in the intimidating depths of the Gir forest, abode of Royal Asiatic Lions, Banej in Junagadh district is the single voter polling booth of Gujarat.

The only voter of this sleepy hamlet is a sexagenarian priest Darshan Das. He lives a life of a recluse there and offers prayers at Shiva temple for many years.

Earlier, he had to travel quite a few miles to cast his vote.

But since the Election Commission mandated that no voter should 'ordinarily travel more than two km to reach a booth', the electoral officials of Gujarat travelled to Banej, braving thick forest and occasional encounter with the lions to erect a single voter booth.

Darshandas has been particularly exercising his franchise since 2004. He has been casting his votes in all elections, an Election Commission official said.

The 26 Lok Sabha and seven Assembly constituencies are going to polls on April 30.
