Congress president Sonia Gandhi today termed 'deceptive' the Gujarat model of development, projected by BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.

Addressing a rally in support of sitting MP and Congress candidate Vijay Inder Singhla, Ms Gandhi said the much-publicised Gujarat model of development was deceptive as there was lack of drinking water and health facilities in that state and children were suffering from malnutrition due to lack of nutritious food.

She alleged that the government gave away 45,000 acre land worth crores of rupees to an industrialist for pittance.

Ms Gandhi further alleged that Punjabi farmers residing in Gujarat for the last 50 years, were being forcefully driven out and their lands were being acquired illegally.

Calling Punjab a land of freedom fighters, revolutionaries, brave and peace loving people, the UPA chairperson said peasants of this state have given their sweat and blood to feed the people of this country.

UPA government at the Centre has always taken care of the ryots and increased the Minimum Support Price during its 10-year rule, she claimed.

Listing out the various schemes started by the UPA government, including MGNREGA and Food Security Bill, Ms Gandhi said Rs 37,000 crore was given to self help groups under women empowerment, while infrastructure was given a boost during its 10-year regime.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the Centre started the One Rank One Pension scheme for former servicemen, she added.

Ms Gandhi said the state government had no money to pay salaries to government workers for the last three months.

Talking about the drug mafia prevalent in the state, she said when policemen don't feel safe in Punjab, what to say about the people of the state.

The state will go to polls on April 30.
