The Odisha government today geared up its machineries to combat the rising heat wave condition sweeping across the state with the mercury hovering over 41 degrees Celsius at several places bringing the normal life to a grinding halt.


A high-level meeting held today under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary Jugal Kishore Mohapatra reviewed the blistering heat wave condition in the state and the preparedness of various departments to combat the situation.

Mr Mohapatra has directed to ensure drinking water supply in the urban and rural areas by keeping all the pump houses and RWSS points functional. The Rural Development andPublic Health Departments have been asked to supply water through tankers in difficult areas where no source of water is available.

Principal Secretary Energy Pradeep Kumar Jena has said RWSS pump house will not be disconnected with power supply because of power bills during the summer.

As a safety measure, Public Health and Rural Development departments have been directed to keep hired generator sets in the pump houses to meet any power supply eventuality.

Rural Development department has started preventive repair and maintenance of tube wells.Rural Development Department Secretary C J Vegugopal said 4 vehicles with manpower have been deployed in each block for preventive maintenance.

The Chief Secretary has asked School and Mass Education Department to ensure that school children are not be kept in school or transport bus after 11 O' Clock.

The examinations of colleges will be finished by May 3 and the Summer vacation will start from May 9 to June 17 in colleges. The AWC workers have been directed to open AWC centers during morning hours, restrict outdoor activities and not to expose children to sun.

They have been supplied with ORS and first aid measures. The AWC workers will take up awareness activities regarding special care for children, pregnant women and lactating mothers during summer.
