Sonia Gandhi has destroyed the nation, says Modi in Hoshiarpur
Bharatiya Janata Party prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi has accused Congress president Sonia Gandhi of destroying the nation.
Addressing a rally in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, on Friday evening, Modi said Gandhi was busy in promoting her son and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi.
The government of mother and son has destroyed the nation. She (Sonia Gandhi) is interested only in promoting her son, not in the welfare of the nation. Having worked with government closely for ten years, she was never worried about the nation, she has done only one job in 10 years, that is, preparing her son for politics. The whole nation has been destroyed for this," Modi said.
Later addressing another rally in Pathankot District, Modi said: "Usually, opposition parties join together to remove the incumbent ruling party. But here, the ruling party has joined hands with new people like NGOs and revolutionists not to save the government, but to stop Modi."
BJP and its allies are set to win a narrow majority of the 543 parliamentary seats, defeating the ruling Congress party, in the world's largest democratic election, the latest opinion poll showed on April 15.
The ruling Congress party faces a struggle to be re-elected after a decade in power due to public anger over the economic slowdown, high inflation and a string of corruption scandals.
Indian elections are notoriously hard to predict, however, due to the country's diverse electorate and a parliamentary system in which local candidates hold great sway. Voting in the world's most populous democracy, where about 815 million people are expected to cast their votes, is phased over several weeks, ending on May 12. Results are due to be announced on May 16.
