Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) today demanded clarification from Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan over his remarks seeking to bar regional parties from contesting the Lok Sabha elections. In an interview to an English daily, Mr Chavan had recently said 'The regional parties are not allowed to contest the national elections in Germany.

"Similarly, we must prohibit regional parties from contesting the Lok Sabha polls. Only then will the polity move towards a two- or three-party system, like the one that exists in the United States.' On this, NCP spokesperson told reporters here today that the party seeks to know, exactly what the Chief Minister wanted to say, because in a democratic country like India, every citizen has a right to contest election.
