The Howrah district court today pronounced eight convicted persons, including expelled CPI(M) leader Biswajyoti Bose and Dr Piyali Das to life term jail and four to seven years of imprisonment for murdering gynaecologist Sushil Pal in 2004.


District Judge Tonmoy Gupta, who convicted the 12 accused yesterday, pronounced the quantum of punishment in presence of slain medico's widow Kanika Pal who said justice was given after 10 years of waiting.

While expelled CPI(M) leader Biswajyoti Bose, Dr Piyali Das, Shubhonarayan Ghosh, Amit Banerjee, Prahlad Sarkar, Suren Agarwal, Santosh Agarwal and Rajib Nath have been given life sentence for murdering the medic on July 2, 2004, Jayanta Ghosh, Biswanath Kangshabanik, Chandan Dome and Krishnendu Sadhukhan had been sentenced to seven years jail for aiding the killers.

Dr Sushil Pal of Serampur Walsh Hospital was brutally murdered on July 2, 2004 after refusing to abort Dr Piyali Das' five months old foetus at a nursing home in Bally, Howrah.

The body of Pal was found on the following day in Saraswati Khal in Howrah. Dr Pal had been called at the nursing home for an emergency case.
