Showers lash Jalandhar, wheat harvesting can be delayed
Showers brought the mercury down today after the city and surroundings had light to moderate rains.
The showers started pouring since midnight and had been continuing as yet. The roads with potholes have been filled with muddy and rain waters affecting smooth traffic on all leading highways to Pathankot, Amritsar, Ludhiana and Kapurthala.
Farmers are a worried lot which had yet to begin with the work of wheat harvesting. In some of the areas, farmers had started harvesting the gold crop on Baisakhi, as per the centuries old tradition being in practice for harvesting the crop on the very first day of Baisakhi, also the first day of the Bikrami Samvat.
Though the farmers in some villages started harvesting the crop but majority of the farms are yet to touch the sickle till it ripe. Due to bad weather and rains lashing in the area, the standing wheat crop is likely to be damaged.
The agriculture scientists apprehended that the crop would be affected by nearly 5 to 6 per cent. If the weather turns normal, the damage would be less in that case.
They also fear that the windstorm if plays its role and the crop is flattened, then the loss to the crop will be more than 10 per cent.
