Left parties cry rigging, urges EC to act
As polling for the first phase of Lok Sabha elections continued in four North Bengal districts today, the opposition Left Front alleged 'a reign of terror' unleashed by ruling Trinamool Congress activists and urged the Election Commission to ensure free and fair polling.
In a complaint lodged with the Election Commission, Front leader CPI(M) alleged that one of its party workers was injured when Trinamool Congress men attacked some Left supporters at Shikarpur in Mathabhanga of Cooch Behar district.
The party said AITC supporters attacked its workers when they protested against bogus voting.
In another incident, a Left Front polling agent was injured in a Trinamool attack at Fulbari in Toofanganj under Alipurduar constituency, the party alleged.
Forward Bloc leader Udayan Guha alleged that three party workers were injured and hospitalised in an attack.
He also alleged that central forces were not visible in the district and widespread attacks, intimidation and rigging by the ruling party activists were going on. He said he would demand repoll in three Assembly segments of Cooch Behar South, Shitalkuchi and Mathabhanga under Cooch Behar Parliamentary constituency.
In Kolkata, West Bengal Left Front Chairman Biman Basu alleged that the Trinamool Congress had let loose a reign of terror to scare the voters.
"We have been telling that there is no law and order in the state. The incidents prove our claim. Trinamool Congress does not want free and fair polls and that's why they have indulged in terror tactics," he said.
The Front Chairman urged the Election Commission to take immediate steps to ensure that polling is free and fair.
