A local court today remanded an one-eyed serial child molester to police custody for a week.

The accused, Ayaz Mohammad Ali Ansari alias Firoze Kaniya (35), who preyed on children in different parts of the city and suburbs, was finally nabbed by the police yesterday from the Golibar area of Khar (East) and was produced before the Andheri court here.

Almost the entire Mumbai police force was trying hard to trace the accused who was finally nabbed by the D N Nagar police.

The authorities had drawn more than five sketches of the accused from different angles hoping to home in on him.

Till a week ago, Ansari had not been identified by the police. Several teams of policemen from the local police stations, Crime Branch and Anti-Terrorism Squad, among others, were trying to locate him and Commissioner of Police Rakesh Maria himself had created a special team of around 60 police personnel to nab him.

According to the police, last year, Ansari was arrested by the Malad police in a robbery case. He was sent to jail for six months. In May 2013, he came out of jail and immediately started targeting females, especially small girls.

Ansari is reportedly a habitual criminal and a drug addict. Most of the time, he was allegedly under influence of narcotic substances, police said and added that while he targeted several small girls and young women, he had cases of theft registered against him at several police stations.
