Assam: 2 killed, 1 hurt in two blasts

By Hemanta Kumar Nath, Guwahati, Jan 24 : Two people were killed and another was injured in two separate explosions in Assam on Thursday ahead of the Republic Day celebration.
Two people were killed, when a powerful bomb exploded in a car in Assam's Dima Hasao district on Thursday night, police said on Friday.
According to reports, the explosion occurred around 9-30 pm on Thursday at Sat Kilo area near Umrangso Garampani in the hill district.
"The deceased persons had carried the bomb in a Maruti car from Meghalaya in direction of United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent), targeting to explosion in Guwahati city," Assam police IGP (Law and Order) SN Singh said.
The deceased persons were identified as Md Sahabuddin and Md Moinuddin after recovering a pan card and car documents from the car.
Police recovered two burned bodies from the car on Friday morning.
In separate incident, a person was injured, when a grenade exploded at Dhekiajuli area in Sonitpur district on Thursday night.
Police recovered an unexploded grenade nearby a petrol pump at Dhekiajuli area on Friday morning.
"Suspected militants had lobbed the grenade targeting to the petrol pump," a top police official said.
On other hand, security forces apprehended a hardcore militant of ULFA (I) in Goalpara district along with Assam-Meghalaya border on Friday.
Security forces recovered a 7.65 pistol, ammunitions in possession of the nabbed militant, who was identified as Santosh Rabha.
A total of 12 outfit groups including ULFA (I), NDFB, KLO, PLA of north eastern region of India have called general strike on Jan 26 and urged the people of the region to boycott the Republic Day celebration.
The intelligence report said that, several militant groups have prepared to strike during the Republic Day celebration.
Security has been beefed up in Assam and other parts of the NE India.
"Based on intelligence input, we have arranged tight security across the state and launched operation against militants," Assam DGP Khagen Sarma said.
