Punjab ready for free, fair, peaceful Lok Sabha polls : DGP
Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Suresh Arora said the police was fully prepared to conduct free, fair and peaceful polling in the state scheduled to be held on April 30.
The Election Commission has decided to provide 182 companies of para military forces for the Lok Sabha polls. Out of which, 35 companies have already been reported and remaining 137 expected to report by April 26.
The DGP held a meeting with seven district police chiefs, DIGs and IGP of Bathinda range, consisting of Moga, Ferozepur, Fazilka Muktsar, Faridkot, Bathinda and Mansa, last evening.
He instructed police officials for strict implementation of model code of conduct and also directed for complete sealing of inter-state borders of Rajasthan and Haryana to check inflow of liquor/drugs and vehicles at naka points.
Mr Arora specifically directed district police chiefs to maintain law and order in their respective districts so that voters could exercise their franchise without any fear.
Bathinda zone IGP Paramraj Singh Umranangal informed the meeting that so far 320 cases have been registered since implementation of model code of conduct and 293 accused including known smugglers have been arrested. Besides 51 vehicles were impounded.
The IGP said more than 33 kg heroin, 33 kg contraband opium, more than 48 quintals of poppy husk have been seized. He also informed that Rs 97 lakh have seized and 126 proclaimed offenders have also been arrested.
The IG said in seven districts more than 21,221 police men will be deployed and 49 companies of para-military forces in the zone. Seven companies of para military forces already reported, he added.
He claimed that the inter-state borders with Haryana and Rajasthan have been completely sealed to check inflow of liquor and smugglers. He also claimed that more than 91 per cent licensed arms have been deposited sofar in the Bathinda police zone.
