As many as 340 athletes from 17 states will take part in the 11th National Youth Athletics Championship to be held in Goa from April 20 to 22.


Speaiking to media persons here today, Goa Athletics Association president Francisco Sardinha, accompanied by general secretary Paresh Kamat, said the 3-day event for under-18 boys and girls has been organized by State Athletics Association under the auspices of Athletics Federation of India and Sports Authority of Goa to be held at Bambolim stadium.

The event is of a great significance as teams of young boys and girls will be selected on the basis of athletes' performance for upcoming Asian group for World Youth Olympic Games to be held in August at Niging in China, he said.

Kamat said the event will be held in two sessions every day one in the morning from 0630 hours to 0930 hours and in evening from 1600 hours till 2000 hours.

The Championship will be inaugurated by Goa Assembly Speaker Rajendra Arlekar on April 20 in the presence of Secretary General of Athletics Federation of India P K Valson.

Asian Gold medalist Shiny Wilson will be chief guest for closing ceremony on April 22,

Six athletes from Goa will be felicitated on the occasion for their contribution to athletics.

They are Rosalio Barreto, Dr Susan D'Souza, Joao Caitan, Vrunda Vernekar, Mario Moares and Lalan Kalangutkar.
