BJP lodges complaint with EC after attack on Babul Supriyo
The BJP today lodged a complaint with the Election Commission after Bollywood singer Babul Supriyo, contesting the Asansol Lok Sabha seat, was allegedly manhandled by ruling Trinamool Congress supporters during campaigning at Raniganj in Burdwan district today.
BJP's West Bengal unit president Rahul Sinha said besides an FIR lodged with the Ranigunj police station, a complaint was forwarded to the EC, which already sought a report of the incident.
The singer and his supporters during a road show were allegedly assaulted and abused by supporters of the Trinamool Congress headed by Senapathy Mondal.
Denying this, Mr Mondal said the singer and his supporters had created chaos during campaigning. Babul Supriyo was allegedly pushed during exchange of words with Mondal, the BJP alleged adding its three supporters were also injured in the attack.
BJP supporters also put up a road blockade on NH 60 to protest attack on its Asansol candidate on a day when the EC had given poll notification for six Lok Sabha seats in south Bengal, including Asansol.
Mr Sinha, who is also contesting North Kolkata seat, alleged this was the second time Babul Supriyo was attacked by TMC supporters.
Meanwhile, opposition leaders CPI(M)'s Robin Deb and Pradeep Bhattacharya condemned the attack on the singer saying the ruling party apprehending has started attacking both the opponents and the EC to create terror.
