A statics surveillance team assisted by the Commissionerate police seized gold and diamonds worth Rs 75 lakh during checking of vehicles late last night.

ADCP City (I) Naresh Dogra said the valuables were recovered during search of a car conducted jointly by the teams of the local police and static surveillance at a naka specially laid near Kalia on Jalandhar-Pathankot highway. Dogra said that both the teams of the poll panel headed by Navchetan Singh were conducting search of the outgoing and incoming vehicles at the naka.

During search of a car the poll panel noticed a security man seated on the driver's seat and carrying a gun with him in the vehicle. Inspector Rajinder Sharma, SHO PS division number 1 asked the gunman to show the license of the gun and permission for carrying it obtained from any appropriate authority. He failed to produce the original license of the gun and instead showed photocopy of the same which led to some suspicion in the minds of the poll panel and conducted a thorough search of the vehicle which led to the recovery of gold weighing two kg and some costly diamonds. The value of the goods seized is said to be Rs 75 lakh.

The police had confiscated his gun also. The gun man Hari Bahadur Thapa had been taken into custody for further interrogation. He told the police that the goods seized were being taken to Chandigarh to be further sent to Delhi and Mumbai.
