Opposition's attempt to divide Bengal will not succeed: Mamata
Charging the Congress,BJP and the CPI(M) with making an 'unholy alliance' against the Trinamool Congress to defeat its candidates, party supremo Mamata Banerjee today sought the whole-hearted support of the people, particulay the women and the minorities, to help TMC become the third largest party in the Lok Sabha by winning all the 42 seats in the state.
Addressing a huge public rally here in favour of TMC candidate for Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat Baichung Bhutia, Ms Banerjee alleged that all these parties, particularly the BJP and the Congress, were out to divide the state by overtly supporting the creation of Gorkhaland,as demanded by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, headed by Bimal Gurung.
Describing such attempts(of creating Gorkhaland out of Darjeelong district) as 'nothing but a day dream' of the BJP and Congress and an absurd demand of GJM, Ms Banerjee lambasted both the party leaders including BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. She reiterated her commitment to ensuring uninterrupted development in the hills.
'The people of Darjeeling are getting ready to give a fitting reply to such an absurd demand and the nefarious design of the BJP and the Congress,' she averred and expressed confidence that TMC candidate and former India football captain Baichung Bhutia would win the April 17 poll with a thumping majority.
Lashing out at both the national partiers in most part of her speech, Ms Banertjee also charged them with spending crores of rupees for purchasing votes and destroying the peaceful atmosphere and religious harmony in the state.
The TMC supremo, however, reiterated her confidence that none of such nefarious designs would be successful.
'People have seen the amount of developmental work being done during the past two and half years of TMC rule in Bengal where communal harmony was at its best despite continuous provocations from all these parties,' Ms Banerjee pointed out.
Incidentally Chopra, despite being situated in North Dinajpur District, is one of the seven assembly constituencies of Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat where heavyweight BJP leader Surinder Singh Ahaluwalia with full support from Bimal Gurung's Gorkha Janamukti Mocha,is locked in a close battle with Baichung Bhutia with both the Congree and the CPI(M) also fielding their own candidates.
